Why Justice Draft exists

Justice Draft exists because writing a victim statement shouldn't feel impossible.

A message from the founder

Hi, my name is Rae 👋

For most of the day, I work quietly in the public sector. But for the rest of the time, I’m the dedicated founder of Justice Draft. I’d like to invite you into the story of how it came to be.

Everyone has a strength that others naturally lean on in times of need. Some people are great listeners. Some fix cars. Others can create a magical meal. Me - I’m the person who helps people write difficult things.

“Rae, can you please review my essay?”
“Rae, would you mind looking over this email before I send it?”
“Rae, I need to write a victim impact statement. Can you help me?”

Two things have always surprised me as the writing helper:

  • First — more people than you would think are faced with writing a victim impact statement in their lifetime.
  • Second — for something so challenging to do, it is really hard to find proper help.

These realisations lit something in me I couldn’t ignore. After years of research into how courts use victim impact statements, and many conversations with people who had been through the process, that something became Justice Draft.

My mission is simple: to help more people access the right help, in the right way. There will always be a free version of Justice Draft. We will always protect our users through privacy and trauma-informed language. And as we grow, we will keep removing barriers between victim-survivors and justice.

Thank you for trusting Justice Draft with something this important. If there is any way we can improve, please reach out at support@justicedraft.com.au

What Justice Draft is — and isn’t

Justice Draft is a free, guided writing tool. It helps people who have been the victim of a crime put their experience into words. This statement can be submitted to the court, or attached to a criminal compensation application.

Justice Draft It is not a law firm. It does not provide legal advice. It cannot tell you what will happen in your case or guarantee any outcome.

What it can do is make the process of writing a victim impact statement less overwhelming — by guiding you through it one step at a time, with questions written by people who understand how difficult it can be to tell your story.

How the questions were designed

The ten questions in Justice Draft were developed with reference to victim impact statement guidelines across all Australian states and territories, and reviewed for trauma-informed language. Every question has been written to reduce the cognitive load of writing about a painful experience — using gentle, validating language that encourages honest expression without pressure.

A social enterprise

Justice Draft is a social enterprise — a service built around a social purpose. It is free to use because we believe access to this kind of support should not depend on what someone can afford. We are committed to keeping the core tool free for as long as we can.
